Injecting Colour and Innovation into Lighting Design

Unveiling Taras Sgibnev's Award-Winning Interactive Multicoloured Lamp

Delve into the world of Taras Sgibnev's innovative design, the Colour Injector, an interactive multicoloured lamp that redefines the way we interact with light and colour. This design, a physical embodiment of the RGB colour system, has earned Sgibnev the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2017.

Colour Injector is a unique exploration of the nature of colour, represented through an interactive design that allows users to change the lamp's light colour in an unconventional way. This innovative lamp design is a physical expression of the way red, green, and blue light are used in digital interfaces to create a full spectrum of different hues. The lamp's design encourages emotional responses and engagement from its users, making it not just a lighting fixture, but an interactive piece of art.

The lamp's unique properties lie in its design and operation. Syringes suspended below the lamp are connected to another set inside the body using clear tubes, allowing the movement of ink to be seen as it moves towards or away from the lamp. The handles of the internal syringes are attached to sliding switches connected to an Arduino microcontroller, which controls the colour output of LED rings. This innovative design allows users to physically interact with the lamp and control the colour of the light it emits.

The Colour Injector was born out of Sgibnev's desire to create an analogue converter from CMYK to RGB colours. After several prototypes and a simplification of the concept, the final design was achieved. The lamp's minimalist shape was carefully chosen after numerous sketches and prototypes, resulting in a design that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is functional.

Creating the Colour Injector was not without its challenges. Sgibnev had to invent a simple yet reliable way to digitise the physical input in real time. Several sensors, including barometers and potentiometers, were tested. One of the biggest challenges during the prototype development was to hide all the electronics inside the lamp so that nothing except control syringes and a power cable go outside of the shade.

The Colour Injector is more than just a lamp; it is a testament to Sgibnev's innovative thinking and design prowess. The lamp has been recognised for its outstanding design, winning the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2017. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.

With its unique design and interactive features, the Colour Injector is a shining example of how design and technology can come together to create a product that is not only functional but also engaging and aesthetically pleasing. It is a testament to Sgibnev's innovative thinking and his ability to push the boundaries of design.
